Dentist offers beautiful crowns in Las Vegas
A crown is a cap placed over the existing tooth to correct its appearance. If a tooth is discolored, misshapen, cracked, or broken, a crown is a wonderful solution. It is also used to protect a cracked tooth or a tooth that has a large filling, to hold a dental bridge in place, or to cover an implant.
Crowns are made of several different materials. Some of the most popular are:
- Metal alloy – Metals, including gold, can withstand biting and chewing better than other materials. They are thinner, last longer, and rarely chip or break. While gold crowns are viewed favorably as a fashion statement, other metal alloys are recommended only for use on back teeth.
- Porcelain fused to metal – These crowns can be matched to the color of the existing teeth. The porcelain fused to metal crowns look like the patient’s natural teeth and are used for both front and back teeth.
- All porcelain – Porcelain crowns are the best to match to the color of the existing teeth, and are better suited for patients with metal allergies. They are a lovely option for front teeth.
- Temporary crowns – As opposed to the previous options, a temporary crown is made in the office rather than a dental lab. They are made of acrylic or stainless steel and are used to cover and protect a tooth until a permanent crown is completed.
Normally, two visits to the dentist are required. On the first visit, the dentist will take an X-ray of the area. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the tooth and gum around the tooth. It is then filed down to make room for the crown. Impressions of the opposing teeth above and of the tooth are made. Color matching for the crown is done at this time. A temporary crown is cemented over the tooth while the impressions are sent to the lab for the crown to be made. On the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown, check the new crown for color and fit, and cement it in place.
A crowned tooth requires no special oral care, and can last up to 15 years. Dr. Lim at Hillside Dental specializes in using his artistic talent to make a beautiful smile for all of his patients. Call 702-666-8584 to make an appointment.
