DENTAL IMPLANTS

When you think of what a dental implant is, the best way to picture it is as an artificial tooth root in a shape similar to a screw. This dental implant (called a post), when placed in your jawbone, will fuse with the natural bone and become a sturdy base onto which a connecter (called an abutment) can be attached. The abutment is placed onto the post and then your new replacement tooth (called a crown) is affixed to the abutment. The crown, which will be crafted specifically for you, is made to match the color and shape of your natural surrounding teeth and to fit comfortably into the space made by your missing tooth.

Modern dental implants are the strongest system available for supporting your replacement teeth and have been used, quite successfully, for over 30 years. A dental implant will allow your new tooth to look, feel and function comfortably and naturally.

BENEFITS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

There are many benefits to receiving a dental implant to replace lost teeth that including:

  • An implant will help maintain bone structure integrity in the jaw.

  • Adjacent teeth will remain healthy without the need for bridgework.

  • Replacement of loose-fitting dentures.

  • Even bite distribution throughout the mouth.

  • Implants feel and function just like natural teeth.

  • Bone loss is prevented, which preserves your facial appearance.

WHY DO YOU NEED A DENTAL IMPLANT?

The most common reason a patient will need a dental implant is if they’ve lost one of their permanent teeth. Dental implants serve as a complete tooth replacement and there are several reasons a patient may need a dental implant.

  • Prevent your teeth from shifting into empty gaps - If you have lost a tooth and there is a gap, the surrounding teeth (over time) will eventually shift into that gap causing spacing issues between your natural remaining teeth. Unevenly spaced teeth are more difficult to keep clean and that could lead to additional dental costs for you in the future. Receiving a dental implant now will allow proper spacing to remain and you can avoid these spacing issues.

  • Jawbone conservation – When a tooth is lost, some patients may elect to receive a fixed bridge instead of a dental implant. The biggest issue with this is that, with a fixed bridge, the jawbone underneath the missing tooth will eventually begin to deteriorate. This happens due to a lack of adequate stimulation to the jawbone that the missing tooth’s root used to provide. This same issue can occur with dentures, which are not implanted. The longer you wait to get a dental implant, the higher chance that your jawbone will lack the integrity necessary to receive one without pursuing a bone graft.

  • Implant-supported dentures – When patients receive dentures, there are often complaints about improper fit, mouth sores, sunken lips, and food limitations. A permanent fix to these complaints is to receive implant-supported dentures.

  • Preserve your appearance – When you lose teeth, your jawbone will eventually begin to deteriorate. This will often cause a sunken-in appearance of the face that will make you look much older than you are. When you receive a dental implant, the post provides stimulation to the jawbone that will keep it healthy and dense and allow you to keep your full and youthful facial appearance.

REPLACING TEETH AND RESTORING SMILES WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are titanium roots that are replaced in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support a dental prosthesis, including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today's treatments are so natural-looking, that no one will know you had surgery. There is approximately a 95 percent success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with lifelike all-porcelain crowns. For more details, ask your dentist.

THE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCESS

When you first come into Hillside Dental, you’ll work with Dr. Lin in the planning of your dental implant procedure. This is often considered the most critical stage of the process due to the importance of a well-thought-out treatment plan. The process is near painless and consists of the following phases:

  • Implant placement – The post will be inserted into the jaw.

  • Healing – During this phase, the bone around the implant will heal and fuse to the inserted post.

  • Abutment placement – Once the healing of the implant has been completed, the abutment will be placed onto the post.

  • Crown – A crown will be custom made for you and, once it has been crafted to exact specifications, it will be bonded to the abutment.
