Most people do not consider a gap in their teeth a desirable part of a beautiful smile. Losing a tooth, especially in the front of the mouth, can be an embarrassment as well as an impediment to speech and eating. At Hillside Dental, we understand, and have many options available for our patients.

One of the most popular procedures available is a dental bridge. Traditional fixed bridges replace the missing tooth or teeth with artificial teeth and it will bridge the gap the missing tooth has left. It is made up of two crowns, one on each side of the gap, called abutment teeth. In between, a pontic, or false tooth is fused to the crowns on the two abutment teeth. Bridges are made from porcelain fused to metal, or ceramic, depending on the dentist’s recommendation.

The procedure is normally done in two visits. On the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared. Some of the enamel on these teeth is removed and they are shaped to allow a crown to fit over them. The dentist will then take impressions, from which the model can be created to send to the dental lab. The lab will then make the dental bridge. The dentist may have the patient wear a temporary bridge to protect the prepared teeth.

The second visit is when the dentist will remove the patient’s temporary bridge. The new bridge will be checked and adjusted for proper fit as needed. The dentist will then cement the bridge into place. Depending on the individual patient, he may temporarily fix the bridge into place, requiring one or more follow up visits to ensure that it fits well. Once completed, the bridge will look and function like a natural part of the patient’s mouth.

Bridges should last anywhere from five to fifteen years and sometimes even longer with proper care. Good oral hygiene will help the bridge to last a very long time. The dentist or dental hygienist will demonstrate proper oral care techniques for cleaning under the bridge to keep the abutment teeth and the remaining teeth healthy and strong so the bridge will be successful.

Dr. Lim and the professionals at Hillside Dental believe a natural smile is a work of art, and are committed to creating a work of art for each patient. Call today at  (702) 666-8584.
