A dental crown is a cap placed over the existing tooth if it is discolored, misshapen, cracked, or broken. It is also used to hold a dental bridge in place, or to cover an implant. The cost of dental care such as a crown is a major factor in deciding upon the service for many patients. At Hillside Dental, we work with most major insurance carriers, and have financing options available that will allow monthly payments.

Two different visits are required for a crown. On the first visit, the dentist will take an X-ray of the area to check the roots and the surrounding bone. Additional dental procedures may be needed if there is severe decay or if infection is present. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the tooth and gum around the tooth. The tooth will then be shaped to make room for the crown. The amount of tooth removed and the cost of the procedure depends on the material used for the crown. Gold, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and metal alloy are the most common materials used.

Impressions of the teeth above and of the area of the tooth will be made to be sure the crown will not affect the patient’s bite. Color matching for porcelain and porcelain fused to metal crowns is done at this time. A temporary crown is usually made of acrylic and is cemented over the tooth while the impressions are sent to the lab for the crown to be made.

On the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the new crown for color and fit. If everything is correct, and the dentist will permanently cement the new crown in place.

Sensitivity to heat and cold is common as the anesthetic wears off. The patient may be advised to use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Otherwise, tooth care for a permanent crown does not need any special care. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits are sufficient for good oral health.
